About Natural Therapies
Yes. The legalisation of nature-based therapies in Australia occurred in 2016. Currently, natural therapies are legally accessible to a patient when prescribed by an authorised Australian doctor. The prescriber must have the required documentation and approvals to prescribe - such as SAS-B or Authorised Prescriber approval - which are obtained from the Therapeutic Goods of Australia (TGA). In some states, relevant state approvals may also apply.
Recreational use remains illegal throughout all states and territories within Australia.
This depends on whether your travel is domestic or international.
Domestic travel: Yes, you can travel with your prescribed nature-based therapy. However, you are required to keep your medication in the original container with the pharmacy label still intact so that you can easily demonstrate that your medication has been legally prescribed to you.
International travel: This is a more complex issue as nature-based therapies, even if legally prescribed in Australia, is still illegal in many countries. Prior to embarking on international travel, you will need to do careful research on your destination’s (including any stop-overs!) laws concerning prescribed medications. This may include contacting the Consulate of the country you are travelling to. For more information, https://www.smartraveller.gov.au/ is a great resource.
Due to the current driving laws surrounding natural therapies, it is recommended that you do not drive as part of your treatment. Active constituents of natural therapies can be detected in urine several days after usage and may be tested as part of a routine roadside drug test. Drive Change is an organisation advocating to change these laws with active petitions, please click the link provided if you would like to find out more.
About Your Prescription
The expiry for a prescription is dependent on the “scheduling” of your prescribed medication. A Schedule 4 prescription is valid for 12 months from the date of prescribing. However, the majority of natural therapy prescriptions, are Schedule 8 medications and therefore have a shorter expiry date of six months from the issuing date.
If you would like more information around the scheduling of your medication and the specific expiry date for your prescription, please contact us and we would be happy to provide individualised advice.
This is dependent on two factors: your health fund and the specific level of coverage you have. We are always happy to provide a tax invoice with your order so that you can speak with your health fund, even if you are not sure whether you are eligible for a rebate - just let us know. You can also view this Honahlee page for more information.
